The airports in East China's Shanghai flew into the record books during the recent May Day holiday – recording new peaks for both passenger and flight numbers.
On May 5, the last day of the holiday, the airports handled 2,307 flights and served 374,000 passengers, the highest ever recorded for the holiday.
Officials said that on May 1-5 Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports handled the departures and arrivals of a combined 11,000 flights, a whopping 29 percent increase on the previous year.
Even more uplifting, the passenger count reached a remarkable 1.7 million, marking a 37 percent year-on-year increase. Pudong Airport was responsible for 7,000 flights and served 1.07 million passengers, while Hongqiao Airport handled 4,000 flights and 631,000 passengers.
In line with the Shanghai Shopping Festival, the airports enhanced the festive travel experience by hosting a series of cultural and commercial events.
Highlights included a coffee industry promotion and a symphony concert at Pudong Airport, along with Hongqiao Airport's "Sweet Journey of the Shopping Festival" and piano performances.
Both airports created a rousing festive vibe for the break, boosted by the Shanghai Shopping Festival, focusing on overall improvements to the quality of their services for travelers.
